About the event
Curious about psychedelics and how they are changing the landscape in Texas? Join us for an eye-opening panel discussion where we’ll explore how psychedelic-assisted therapy is poised to transform how we approach mental health, and how Texas is playing a surprising and bold leadership role in the psychedelic revolution. The new legislative session is gearing up, and you'll get the real scoop about what's happening (hint, ibogaine for Texans?) and how YOU can contribute. What starts here, changes the world, and Texas is helping shape the psychedelic future in the United States.Â
Our expert panelists include Dr. Lynnette Averill of the Baylor College of Medicine, a researcher who will break down the science behind psychedelic healing and the state of medical research. You’ll hear from attorney Bryan Hubbard, former Chairman and Executive Director of the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission, who is leading the ibogaine revolution across the United States, including a big and bold new campaign in Texas. Dr. Greg Fonzo, clinical psychologist and co-director of the Center for Psychedelic Research and Therapy at Dell Medical School, will share how the University of Texas at Austin is changing psychedelic research forever. And joining the panel discussion will be Logan Davidson, an experienced legislative advocate who will break down the past, present, and future of psychedelic policy.
Â
Why attend? Whether you’re a mental health professional, a person interested in psychedelics, or just fascinated by new developments in research, this event will deepen your understanding of the state of psychedelics in Texas. You’ll leave with practical knowledge and a fresh perspective on how these therapies could make a difference and where they stand with the FDA and state government, and how Texas is continuing to lead the way in the psychedelic revolution.
Join us for an enlightening and inspiring discussion!
Early bird tickets available until January 10th!
Bio of Speaker/Panelists:
Dr. Lynnette A. Averill is the daughter of a US Marine who died by suicide after years of struggling with ineffective treatments. His life – and subsequent death – shaped Dr. Averill personally and professionally. The focus of Dr. Averill’s work is on studying and supporting novel, rapid-acting interventions with potential to save lives. Her research focuses on the fine-grained understanding of mechanisms underlying psychedelic medicines, the effects of chronic stress and trauma, and treatment response. She served as subject matter expert for TX House Bill 1802 which passed with near-unanimous bipartisan support and funds a clinical trial of psilocybin for Veterans with PTSD, which Dr. Averill will lead.
Greg Fonzo, PhD
Dr. Fonzo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.  He is also Co-Director of UT's newly launched Center for Psychedelic Research and Therapy. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia Honors Program in 2005 with a dual bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology in 2013 from the San Diego State University/University of California-San Diego Joint Doctoral Program. He completed his postdoctoral research fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine.  Dr. Fonzo’s research focuses broadly on utilizing non-invasive neuroscience tools to understand mechanisms of affective disorder psychopathology and treatment and leveraging this understanding to improve clinical care and patient outcomes with neuromodulatory, psychotherapeutic, and psychedelic approaches.
W. Bryan Hubbard is the former Chairman and Executive Director of the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission. He concurrently served as Special Counsel to the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office of Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control and was its prior Executive Director. He served on the Kentucky Judicial Commission on Mental Health, the Kentucky Child Support Guidelines Commission, Mine Safety Review Board, and the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy’s Recovery Ready Communities Advisory Council. He previously served as Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Income Support wherein he led the Commonwealth’s Social Security Disability and Child Support Enforcement programs. He practiced workers’ compensation law representing Walmart, Tyson Foods, and Tennessee Valley Authority for sixteen years. During his practice years, he observed the predacious onset of Kentucky’s Opioid Epidemic amid generational joblessness, poverty, disability, and substance use. He was raised in Virginia’s coalfields and is the proud grandson of two grade-school educated coal miners.
Logan Davidson is the executive director of Texans for Greater Mental Health, a grassroots nonprofit supporting psychedelic therapies in Texas. Before joining T4GMH, he was a legislative and political staffer with bipartisan experience at the state and federal level. He served as Legislative Director and Chief of Staff for Representative Alex Dominguez, where he shepherded Texas' historic psychedelic therapy law, HB 1802, to passage and implementation. Logan graduated from Texas Tech University and received his MBA from the University of North Texas, and he resides in Austin, Texas.
