About the event
In this provocative panel conversation, we'll hear from three Austin-area veterans who have experienced the healing power of psychedelic medicine to transcend their trauma to become their best selves. These three individuals now serve as advocates, visionaries, leaders, and volunteers in this emerging field of therapy. Come learn about their journeys, the healing power of these medicines, and the ways in which many in the veteran community have transformed their lives and their relationships with loved ones as a result. These veterans represent some of the major organizations shaping the psychedelic therapy movement: Heroic Hearts Project, Heroic Path to Light, and The Mission Within.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Justin LaPree
Justin LaPree is a decorated Marine and former Austin, Texas, firefighter. After returning home from the Middle East, he struggled with a TBI, PTSD, and survivor's guilt, enduring everything from homelessness to opioid dependence. In 2018, he attempted suicide at his fire station. Psilocybin and other sacred medicines served as the catalyst to change his life, and after 15 years of losing friends to suicide, he was determined to create a safe and sacred container for healing, connection, and transformation. In 2022, he founded Heroic Path to Light, a Texas-based nonprofit serving the veteran, first responder, and Gold/White star communities.Â
Kasey Pipitt
Kasey Pipitt enlisted in the Army at 18 and became a Ranger by 19. When wounded in Afghanistan by a grenade, his logical mind processed the trauma with reasoning: a dangerous job has life threatening consequences. It wasn't until his separation from the military that he realized he was mentally distraught. Like so many of our veterans, Kasey's transition into the civilian world resulted in a loss of identity. Â Psilocybin opened his mind to new perspectives and opportunities, as did ayahuasca. His search for a deepening relationship with plant medicine led him to Heroic Hearts Project, where he now serves as an integration coach. Â
Cassie Cantin
Cassie Cantin is a veteran who served around the world — from South Carolina to Korea to Ft. Hood, Texas. She deployed to Iraq from March 2003 until March 2004. After that deployment, she had the honor of serving at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), now known as San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), and cared for several wounded veterans. While there, she realized that many service members, herself included, were battling invisible wounds. Plagued by insomnia, PTSD, and survivor's guilt, Cassie decided to attend the Mission Within treatment program in June of 2022. Cassie lives in New Braunfels, TX and also serves as a veteran ambassador  for the Boot Campaign.
