INDIGENOUS ART MEETUP: A NIGHT TO SHIFT PERSPECTIVES
Step into the cosmology of Indigenous art at a special evening exploring Wixarika yarn paintings and Shipibo Conibo tapestries — maps of ceremony and ancestral knowledge, not mere decoration. Curator Mary Olivar guides us through these traditions. Art as living transmission, not just visual beauty.

About the event
Join us for a special evening exploring Threads & Patterns: Living Indigenous Art of the Americas introduced to you by curator and good friend of PsyT, Mary Olivar on behalf of the Center for Shamanic Education and Exchange. She will share with us a presentation of Wixarika yarn paintings from the mountains of Northern Mexico and Shipibo Conibo tapestries from the Peruvian Amazon. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions, mingle, and connect with the PsyT community over these works that are more than to please the eyes. They are maps of cosmology, records of ceremony, and living transmissions of knowledge passed from elder to maker to viewer.
As the dusk fades, we begin a special light exhibit created to shed light on the works, illuminating the intricate details of the Wixarika beadwork and yarn paintings and the geometric Kené patterns of the Shipibo Conibo tapestries. The lighting accentuates the layered detail and vibration encoded in each piece, offering a new way to experience work. The Wixarika pieces encode the sacred peyote, the blue deer spirit guide Kauyumari, and the fire god Tatewari. The Shipibo Conibo tapestries translate Icaros, or healing songs, into geometric pattern where sound and image are understood as the same thing.
This gathering, held in partnership with the Center for Shamanic Education and Exchange, offers space for reflection and conversation on indigenous plant medicine traditions, ceremony, and the cosmologies expressed in the exhibited works — grounded in respect for the living communities and lineages these pieces come from. All are welcome, from those familiar with PsyT's community to first-time visitors curious about contemporary art, ceremony, and indigenous cosmology.
