About the event

Join us for a night off mushroom mingling with mushroom-infused mocktails (functional, not psychoactive mushrooms!) to learn about how mushrooms and art have long been intertwined. Fungi is the foundation of our evolution as a species, and for thousands of years, humans have depicted mushrooms in cave drawings, petroglyphs, mushroom stones, early European Renaissance oil paintings, and more. Some believe that ancient art provides evidence of the ritualistic use of psychedelic mushrooms, too. In part one of a two-part talk examining mushrooms, art, and the war on nature, Angel Schatz from Central Texas Mycological Society will take you on a mushroom trip around the world, from present-day India to Siberia, Greece and Guatemala and more. She’ll highlight key mushroom art from around the globe and discuss research from leading historical scholars and ethnomycologists. Open your mycelial mind and experience art, culture, and history through a new lens!

Angel Schatz is a forager, urban homesteader, and mycophile, and she serves as one of the lead organizers of the Central Texas Mycological Society. An inspiring and passionate educator, she strives to make mycology accessible to everyone, particularly those in Central Texas. She’s also a part of the Austin Organic Gardeners’ leadership team, harmonizing vegetable gardening and mushroom growing, particularly by using recycled mushroom blocks. Follow her mycelial and gardening adventures on Instagram @forage.atx and be sure to check out Central Texas Mycological Society to learn more about their rad community events and resources.
