About the event

What do Mario Bros, Banksy, and Alice in Wonderland have in common? Very mush! In part two of a two-part series examining mushrooms, art, and the war on nature, Angel Schatz from Central Texas Mycological Society will explore how mushrooms have been depicted in contemporary art, movies, music, video games, and more, from the start of colonialism into the '60s and '70s to present day. The war on drugs is really a war on nature, she claims, and a tool implemented by the ruling class to maintain power and suppress others. She'll explain how the spiritual was replaced with the material and the collective consciousness was replaced with individualism and how art as a commodity grew out of this paradigm.

Angel Schatz is a forager, urban homesteader, and mycophile, and she serves as one of the lead organizers of the Central Texas Mycological Society. An inspiring and passionate educator, she strives to make mycology accessible to everyone, particularly those in Central Texas. She’s also a part of the Austin Organic Gardeners’ leadership team, harmonizing vegetable gardening and mushroom growing, particularly by using recycled mushroom blocks. Follow her mycelial and gardening adventures on Instagram @forage.atx and be sure to check out Central Texas Mycological Society to learn more about their rad community events and resources.

All are welcome in our meetings, but you must register in advance. Meeting location is in your confirmation email.
